ForwardAlabama Infectious Diseases Society 2026 Annual Meeting
The purpose of the Alabama Infectious Diseases Society (ALIDS) is to promote strong antimicrobial stewardship throughout the state of Alabama. This in-person meeting will provide educational sessions on different topics related to antimicrobial stewardship.
Target Audience
This application-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), and Nurses (ABN).
Learning Objectives
- Distinguish complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) from uncomplicated UTI (uUTI) using the updated Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)classification schema.
- Apply the IDSA framework to select appropriate antibiotic therapy for cUTI, including criteria for intravenous to oral (IV-to-PO) transition
- Evaluate newly and soon-to-be-approved options for the treatment of UTI
- Apply evidence-based antifungal stewardship principles to select, de-escalate, and discontinue antifungal therapies based on clinical risk factors and rapid diagnostic data.
- Analyze the changing epidemiology of Candida species, with a focus on non-albicans species and emerging multidrug-resistant pathogens such as Candida auris.
- Identify patients who are appropriate candidates for early oral step-down therapy and newer treatment strategies, including rezafungin.
- Determine which patients with candidemia should undergo screening for metastatic infection.
- Describe the role of antimicrobial susceptibility reporting cascades as a microbiology-based intervention to support antimicrobial stewardship efforts.
- Evaluate the impact of selective anti-MRSA and Gram-negative susceptibility reporting on antimicrobial utilization metrics, including days of therapy (DOT) and standardized antimicrobial administration ratios (SAARs).
- Identify practical strategies for implementing laboratory-stewardship collaborations that optimize antimicrobial prescribing while maintaining patient safety
- Evaluate global and local surveillance data to rapidly identify emerging infectious threats, focusing on resurgent vaccine-preventable diseases and high-consequence pathogens.
- Differentiate between phenotypic and genotypic DR-TB classifications to interpret localized resistance trends and optimize antimicrobial stewardship protocols.
- Formulate joint physician-pharmacist workflows to manage rising syphilis cases and ensure timely therapy that complies with state reporting mandates.
- Analyze wastewater epidemiological data to anticipate community disease surges and guide hospital formulary and infection prevention readiness.

Kyle C. Molina is a board-certified Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Specialist who practices at Scripps Green Hospital. His research interests include the use of long-acting lipoglycopeptides, COVID-19, and transplant-related infections. Having authored over 50 publications, he currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Guidelines Committee for the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.
Dr. Megan Amerson-Brown is an Assistant Professor of Pathology in the Division of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and serves as Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. She is board-certified in Medical Microbiology by the American Board of Medical Microbiology, is a board-certified Infection Preventionist, and currently directs UAB's Medical and Public Health Microbiology Fellowship Program.
Dr. Amerson-Brown's work focuses on clinical microbiology, infectious disease diagnostics, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship. She serves on UAB's Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee and has led multiple microbiology-driven quality improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing antimicrobial use, including implementation of antimicrobial susceptibility reporting cascades, diagnostic stewardship interventions, and blood culture quality improvement programs. Her research and clinical interests center on improving infectious disease diagnosis through laboratory innovation and translating microbiology data into actionable patient care decisions. At the national level, Dr. Amerson-Brown serves on the Board of Directors of the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC), contributes to CLSI standards development, and is an active member
Dr. David Cluck is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at East Tennessee State University - Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. Dr. Cluck received his Pharm.D. degree from the Auburn University Harrison
School of Pharmacy and later became faculty at ETSU after completing an infectious diseases specialty residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Outside of the classroom, he serves as an
infectious diseases clinical pharmacist and preceptor at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. His research interests include antiretroviral pharmacotherapy, antimicrobial
stewardship and antibacterial drug resistance. He serves as a clinician-researcher through several different organizations including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the
Southeastern Research Group Endeavor - a consortium of infectious diseases physicians, pharmacists, and academicians. In addition to SIDP, he also has active committee roles with the Infectious
Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
Rachel Tulibagenyi earned her Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She has extensive public health experience working in Uganda, East Africa. In 2020, Ms. Tulibagenyi joined the
Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) as an Epidemiologist working in the Infectious Diseases & Outbreaks Division, specializing as the Enteric Disease Epidemiologist. During the
pandemic, she briefly worked with the CDC Foundation before returning to ADPH in 2024 as an Epidemiologist Senior, where she currently serves as the Enteric Disease Program Manager.
