Advancing Tobacco and Nicotine Cessation Strategies for Low Socioeconomic Communities in Alabama
This webinar will provide information for primary care providers and pharmacies on how to help patients quit smoking and vaping.

Target Audience
This knowledge-based course is intended for PCPs in and community pharmacists serving low socioeconomic status communities in AL, including Pharmacists (ACPE), Pharmacy Technicians (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ABN), Dentists (BDEA), Nurses (ABN), and Social Workers (ABSWE).
Learning Objectives
1. Assess the prevalence and impact of tobacco, nicotine, and electronic cigarette use in low socioeconomic status communities.
2. Explain the pathophysiology of nicotine addiction and withdrawal.
3. Compare and contrast current FDA-approved medications for smoking and nicotine cessation.
4. Identify effective counseling strategies for patients ready to quit nicotine.
5. Identify resources to assist patients with low socioeconomic status to quit nicotine.

Dr. Miranda Andrus currently serves as Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice with Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy and Clinical Professor of Family Medicine with the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine in Huntsville. Dr. Andrus earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from the Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy in 1999. She completed a post-graduate specialty residency in Primary Care at the Durham VA Medical Center and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy in 2000. In 2002, Dr. Andrus became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. Dr. Andrus is currently (2018-2021) serving as treasurer on the board of regents of the American College of Clinical Pharmacists (ACCP). She served as chair of the ACCP Education and Training Practice and Research Network in 2006-2007 and has served on numerous ACCP national committees. In 2009 she received the distinction of Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP).
Natalie Hohmann, Pharm.D., Ph.D., joined the Harrison School of Pharmacy as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice on October 1, 2019. In her role, she will promote clinical and translational science research within the school. Dr. Hohmann’s research uses mixed methods and decision science to develop point-of-care tools that help patients and their caregivers/providers make better healthcare decisions. Her research interests include: risk communication, developing shared decision-making tools, incorporating patient preferences into treatment decisions, and improving quality of care in older adult populations. After earning a bachelor’s degree in cell and developmental biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2008, Dr. Hohmann went on to complete her Pharm.D. at the University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2012. After spending several years in practice, Dr. Hohmann came to Auburn, completing her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2019. While at HSOP, she studied in the Health Outcomes Research and Policy option. Her doctoral dissertation, “Incorporating Patient Input into Value-based Community Fall Prevention for Older Adults: Evaluating Patient Preferences and Willingness to Pay,” was funded by an American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Hohmann is certified in Medication Therapy Management (MTM) by American Pharmacists Association (APhA). She is also active within APhA, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR).
