Alabama Infectious Diseases Society 2024 Annual Meeting
The purpose of the Alabama Infectious Diseases Society (ALIDS) is to promote strong antimicrobial stewardship throughout the state of Alabama. This in-person meeting will provide educational sessions on different topics related to antimicrobial stewardship.
Target Audience
This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), and Nurses (ABN).
Learning Objectives
- Identify risk factors for the development of severe deep neck space infections (DNSIs)
- Summarize current DNSI diagnostic and treatment strategies
- Review the current science of nurse integration into antibiotic stewardship
- Identify practical examples of how stewards and infection preventionists can build nurse collaboration into stewardship efforts
- Define key components of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and clinical breakpoints
- Describe the rationale for recent breakpoint revisions and how to interpret them for and apply them to clinical practice
- Assess key metrics provided by the Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (AUR) module for evaluating antimicrobial utilization
- Identify considerations for the use of AUR module metrics and recognize where challenges and limitations may occur

Dr. Elizabeth Monsees, PhD, RN, CIC, FAPIC, is the Children’s Mercy Senior Director for Infection Prevention and Stewardship Integration. Elizabeth has a faculty position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Monsees has served on national committees and work groups, including the ANA and CDC Antimicrobial Stewardship Working Group, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Research and Education Committees, and their Diagnostic Stewardship Task Force, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Education, Communications, Nominating and Awards, and Research Committees, and the Pediatric infectious Diseases Society Antimicrobial Stewardship workgroup. She has established and delivered educational curriculums nationally and internationally and has authored book chapters on quality methodology, patient safety science, and antimicrobial stewardship. She serves on several editorial boards and is a Clinical Editor the APIC Online Text. Her research is focused on antimicrobial stewardship and the engagement of nurses in safe antibiotic and diagnostic use.
Dr. Navaneeth Narayanan is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He jointly practices as an Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacist at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Adjunct Faculty/TB Consultant for the Global Tuberculosis Institute at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, a CDC-funded TB Center of Excellence. Dr. Narayanan serves as an Advisor for and Voting Member of the CLSI Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) Subcommittee and Co-Chair of the AST Breakpoint Working Group. Dr. Narayanan received his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, completed two years of clinical residency training including his PGY2 Infectious Diseases Specialty Residency and Global Health Clinical Scholar Program training at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He earned his Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology from the Rutgers School of Public Health. Dr. Narayanan is a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP). Currently, Dr. Narayanan is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Pharmacometrics through the University of Maryland via an NIH award – K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Mickala Thompson is a native of Kingston, Jamaica but was raised in South Florida. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. She completed her PGY1 residency at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and her PGY2 Internal Medicine residency at MUSC Health in Charleston, South Carolina. She joined Huntsville Hospital in 2009 and currently serves as a clinical specialist and preceptor in a busy Medical ICU. Dr. Thompson is credentialed by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and Nutrition Support (BCNSP). She is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). She enjoys traveling, weight training, teaching, and discontinuing vancomycin orders.
Dr. Joshua Stripling, MD, DTM&H, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed residency training and Chief Medical Resident in Internal Medicine at UAB before completing Infectious Diseases fellowship training at Mass General Brigham with focus in antimicrobial stewardship and infection control. He is the Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at UAB Hospital and Hospital Epidemiologist at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Clinically, he works closely with residents and fellows on teaching services in General Medicine and Infectious Diseases at UAB and the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Academic interests include appropriate use and duration of treatment for common infectious diseases, diabetic foot infections, and implementation science and quality improvement in the treatment of infectious diseases.
