The Insulin Toolbox - Kristi Kelley

March 19, 2026

Nurses frequently assist with the management of patients with diabetes mellitus who require insulin therapy. With the growing number of insulin formulations available, including multiple concentrations, biosimilar products, and different delivery devices, it is important to understand how these products differ and how they are used in everyday practice to ensure safe and effective use. In clinical practice, insulin selection is often influenced by insurance coverage, formulary restriction, medication cost, and patient preference. These factors may require switching between insulin products or using biosimilars alternatives. Healthcare providers play an important role in helping patients understand these changes, ensuring proper administration technique, and provided education on storage and disposal at home.
This presentation will review commonly used insulin products in outpatient care, discuss substitution and access issues, compare biosimilar insulins, and review correct use of pens, vials, syringes, storage, and sharps disposal to support safe and effective patient self-management.
