MMCAP - Antipsychotic Update
The use of antipsychotic agents in psychiatry is ever-growing. New mechanisms are being developed and approved for managing psychosis and other disorders. This presentation will address common challenges with understanding new ways of managing psychosis, update the participant on strategies for appropriately dosing, switching, and managing the cost of LAI Antipsychotics, and review the current state of using antipsychotics for achieving success in managing major depression. Additionally, there will be a brief review of what is coming in the pipeline of antipsychotic drug development.
Target Audience
This application OR knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Pharmacy Technicians (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ABN), Dentists (AL board approval), Nurses (ABN), and Social Workers (ABSWE).

1. Describe the mechanism of action of non-dopaminergic drugs in managing psychosis
2. Identify ways to improve the use of antipsychotic long-acting injections with a focus on dosing and cost
3. Outline the rationale and current status of the use of antipsychotics in managing major depression
4. Briefly review the current pipeline of antipsychotics

Dr. Sommi is Professor Emeritus at the UMKC School of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacy Practice, with a cross appointment in the Department of Psychiatry in the UMKC School of Medicine and the former Associate Dean for the MU campus location of the school. He is the Pharmacy Consultant for the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
He received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Utah, Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at the University of Utah Hospital and Fellowship in Psychopharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is board certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice and a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists.
Dr. Sommi is involved in the training of psychiatric pharmacy specialty residents and psychiatry residents. His area of research interest is primarily in outcomes associated with drug treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. He has been PI on multiple clinical trials, has numerous journal articles, book chapters and presentations.
Dr. Sommi is a founding member and Past President of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists. Dr. Sommi is actively involved with Crisis Intervention Team training for law enforcement and first responders in the Kansas City area and throughout Missouri. He is also a consultant to community mental health centers in Kansas City and Missouri.
