Prevention 2.0: PEP, PrEP, and Doxy-PEP in Clinical Practice - Kristi Kelley
Nurses are frontline healthcare providers who are often confidants to patients due to their accessibility, approachableness, and attentiveness. Providing nurses with tools to use during initial patient
interviews to identify individuals at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) would support the medical team in determining the most appropriate
approach for optimizing care before initiating a sensitive discussion with the patient. HIV and STIs are preventable diseases thus patient and healthcare education about the options available for
prevention are paramount to improving patient and community health.
Target Audience
This experience and knowledge-based course is intended for Nurses and Social Workers .
Learning Objectives
1. Review transmission of HIV and common STIs.
2. Identify patients in which post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) (+/- doxycycline) is indicated.
3. Recognize the drugs available for PEP and PrEP.
4. Examine patient counseling points specifically for PEP and PrEP drugs.
