Recorded 2024 Preceptor Development Webinar
This preceptor development program was developed to educate and assist preceptors with effective precepting techniques, understanding statues and rules for preceptors in the state of AL, inclusive excellence information relating to precepting, and dealing with the disengaged/unmotivated student. Engaging material will include interactive lectures, real-world examples, and a panel discussion.
This program has been approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for continuing education credit to meet Preceptor licensure requirements.
Target Audience
This knowledge-based program is intended for community or institutional pharmacists.

College of Pharmacy Expectations/Requirements & State Board - Lynn Stevenson
This presentation will review the ALBOP rules regarding precepting externs/interns in the state of Alabama as well as the college's requirements and expectations of preceptors. Preceptors in Alabama have specific training requirements for the ALBOP which this program meets for initial training and renewal which is required every 2 years.
Fostering Inclusive Excellence in Pharmacy Preceptorship - Tanja Redd
This session will explore the impact of legislative changes and accreditation standards on inclusive excellence initiatives in pharmacy education. Participants will learn about the importance of cultural competence, the challenges to achieving inclusive excellence, and the benefits of inclusive practices. Discover best practices for preceptors to promote an inclusive and equitable learning environment in both classroom and clinical settings.

Dana G. Carroll is a Clinical Professor at Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy. She graduated from Harrison School of Pharmacy with her B.S. degree in 1998 and her Pharm.D. in 1999. Dr. Carroll completed a residency in primary care at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2000. She worked at Duke Medical Center in the emergency room as a clinical pharmacist and as an Assistant Professor at University of Oklahoma (Tulsa campus) before joining the faculty with Auburn in 2006 as an Associate Clinical Professor.
Dr. Carroll is board certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and geriatrics (BCGP) and is a certified diabetes educator (CDE). She teaches and precepts pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, graduate students (psychology and social work) and medical residents. She also holds adjunct faculty appointments with the College of Community Health Sciences Family, Internal and Rural Medicine Department and the Psychology Department at the University of Alabama.
Dr. Carroll’s current scholarly endeavors include assessing outcomes in geriatric patients from interdisciplinary care and the scholarship of teaching and learning in both didactic and clinical settings.
Emily McCoy, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCACP is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy's Department of Pharmacy Practice and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She also currently serves as the interim assistant dean for the Mobile campus and for Student Success. In this role, she coordinates various aspects of student life on the Mobile Campus. In partnership with the Mobile Campus Curricular Coordinator, she demonstrates a strong student-centered focus to ensure every student has unparalleled, world-class, and profound opportunities for personal, intellectual, and professional growth while a student at HCOP. As part of her role in Student Success, Dr. McCoy developed and directs the HCOP Peer Coaching Program, which is intended to provide students with individual and group support throughout the didactic portion of the Practice Ready Curriculum (PRC).
Dr. McCoy graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee in 2008. She completed a residency in ambulatory care with a focus in academia in Memphis with the UT-St. Francis Family Medicine residency program and became Board Certified in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (BCACP) in 2011. Dr. McCoy joined the Auburn faculty in August 2009 and has been heavily involved in the development, delivery, and coordination of the PRC, and she served as the course coordinator for the P2 Fall semester for five years.
Dr. McCoy is active in several national pharmacy organizations including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She also currently serves as faculty for the ACCP/ASHP BCACP Review and Recertification Course.
Lena McDowell is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Originally from Snowdoun, Alabama, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences from Auburn University and completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the Harrison College of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, she completed an ASHP-accredited community pharmacy post-graduate year 1 (PGY-1) residency at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Oxford, Mississippi.
Dr. McDowell serves as HCOP’s Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) Coordinator and oversees the college’s five IPPEs: community, health and wellness, health-system, clinical, and population health. In her position, she teaches within the Practice Ready Curriculum in both the didactic and experiential settings. She serves as a preceptor for PGY-1 residents for a longitudinal experiential education rotation. Her primary areas of research and scholarship are focused on experiential education and community pharmacy practice transformation.
Dr. McDowell is actively involved in several state, regional, and national pharmacy organizations, including the Alabama Pharmacy Association, Southeastern Pharmacy Experiential Education Consortium, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
Tanja Redd, MS, PhD serves as the Academic Program Coordinator for the Harrison College of Pharmacy's Office of Alumni and Professional Affairs. The Office of Alumni and Professional Affairs oversees the marketing, registration, and implementation of all continuing education programs for practitioner license requirements as well as the program standards and accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.
Dr. Redd completed her bachelor's degree from Auburn University and received her MBA with a concentration in Human Resource Management from the Keller Graduate School of Management. She previously worked for JP Morgan in New York, New York and Atlanta, Georgia. She returned to Auburn in 2005 and has held positions in Alumni Affairs as a Program Coordinator and as well as in University Outreach with the Center for Educational Outreach and Engagement. Dr. Redd earned a certificate in College and University Teaching in 2020 and recently completed a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the College of Education at Auburn.
Dr. Redd presented “Model Standards for Pre-College Program Divisions” at the Pre-College Programming Workshop of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium. She has also participated in numerous panels speaking on topics of diversity and resiliency. Redd previously received the Employee of the Month (April) award from Auburn. At the Harrison College of Pharmacy, she serves on several college-wide committees including the DEI Council and works with the APAA’s Black Alumni Council. Across the university, Redd serves in leadership positions with the Auburn Black Caucus and on several University committees.
Dr. Redd is married to Auburn alumnus Kelvin Redd ’90, and they have four children who are graduates of the University of North Carolina, University of Alabama, Auburn University, and the University of South Carolina. Dr. Redd loves to travel and attend sporting events, especially Auburn football and basketball.
Pamela L. Stamm, Pharm.D., CDE, BCPS, BCACP, FASHP, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Saint Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri. She subsequently attended the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina to complete her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She rounded off her formal training by completing an ASHP-accredited Primary Care Residency at The Medical Center and Lakeland Family Practice, Jackson, Mississippi. She joined the faculty of Auburn University’s James I. Harrison School of Pharmacy in 1997.
Dr. Stamm has been responsible for various primary care topics within the curriculum throughout her career at Auburn. Currently she utilizes active learning methods to teach migraine, osteoporosis, and stable ischemic heart disease therapy within the practice ready curriculum. She also assists in immunization practicals and journal analyses.
She provides Advanced Practice Experiences (APPE) and Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) in Ambulatory Care within the Central Alabama Veteran's Health Care System where she is privileged with prescriptive authority to provide comprehensive care management for patients. Her scope of practice is broad including but not limited to areas such as Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Hypertension, Gout, Thyroid, Neuropathic pain, Heart Failure, and Smoking Cessation. She is also Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy and Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy as well as Immunization Certified. Her research areas include, SOAP documentation, using video to improve learning, assessing and improving student intervention documentation, and career portfolio development.
Dr. Stamm remains active on the state and national level in several professional societies. She is active within the Alabama Society of Health System Pharmacists, currently serving as co-chair of the Student / Resident Activities Committee and as a member of the Research and Scholarship Committee.
Nationally, she serves on the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioner’s Medication Therapy Management Special Advisory Group and the Foundation’s Forecast Advisory Committee. She also serves on American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s (ACCP) Educational Affairs B Task Force, on the Education and Training Practice and Research Network’s Professional Affairs Committee, and as faculty for the ACCP Teaching and Learning Academy.
Dr. Lynn Stevenson is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Executive Director of Experiential Programs within Clinical Affairs and Outreach.
She grew up in southern middle Tennessee and received a full scholarship to play basketball at Auburn University (1986-91). A four-year letter winner with the Auburn women's basketball team, she helped the Tigers to three-straight NCAA Final Fours from 1988-90. Stevenson completed a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1992 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 1994 from Auburn University. Following graduation, she completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
She has practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist for Huntsville Hospital System in Huntsville, Alabama and as a Clinical Pharmacist for Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Columbus, Georgia. Prior to joining the faculty of HSOP in January 2007, she served the previous four years as Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for Columbus Regional Healthcare System.
As Executive Director of Experiential Programs for HSOP, Stevenson is responsible for direction of the Office of Experiential Programs Office (EPO) which includes the experiential curriculum, interprofessional education and the co-curriculum. The EPO team is responsible for coordinating student pharmacist training in various practice settings in the P1-P4 years. Lynn works closely with the EPO team, HSOP faculty and affiliate faculty to provide student pharmacists with the best possible training experiences.
Stevenson was the recipient of the inaugural HSOP Pinnacle Award in 2019. The Pinnacle Award is given to a HSOP Faculty or Staff member who exemplifies the School’s core values of “Inspiration, Innovation, and Transformation.” Before becoming a faculty member with HSOP in 2007, she was honored by the school as Preceptor of the Year in 2001. She also received the 2006 Community Service Award from the Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Auburn University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education; credits are recognized nationwide.
