What is Long COVID?

March 13, 2024

Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), sometimes known as “long-COVID,” is a dynamic condition that sometimes occurs more than 4 weeks after initial COVID infection and can be characterized by a variety of symptoms.  It is unclear why some individuals experience long-COVID.  This program will explore the conditions, possible etiologies, and immunologic responses associated with long-COVID infection.

This project was funded in part through a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Sub-OTA No. 6922-03-COVID-S002 - Alabama Community Engagement Alliance against COVID-19 Disparities (Alabama CEAL) project, under subcontracts with Research Triangle Institute and Westat, Inc.

Nathan Erdmann MD, PhD completed his MD/PhD with a focus in HIV pathogenesis at University of Nebraska Medical Center. During Infectious Diseases fellowship, he studied the effects of T cell responses on viral adaptation with a goal of developing new strategies for HIV vaccination. In response to the pandemic, he led numerous clinical and research efforts, leading trials assessing antiviral and immunomodulatory interventions and coordinated a multidisciplinary effort to establish a robust COVID-19 cohort. The samples and data for this research cohort led to multiple publications and provided the basis for UAB's selection as a hub for the NIH Long COVID effort RECOVER. Nathan is the PI for UAB, and is MPI on multiple grants exploring the mechanisms of Long COVID. He is Medical Director of the UAB 1917 HIV Clinic where he supervises patient care and leads the educational curriculum for fellows and providers.
